230V 50/60Hz to 115V. 50W Maximum. Magnetek Autotransformer N-1X. This is a auto transformer that provides voltage change between 110 and 220 volts sources/devices or 110 to 220 volts. There are three wires on this transformer; applying 220V to the two outside wires (blk + red)  allows one to pick off  110VAC (blk + blk). Theoretically applying 110VAC to the two black wires would give one  220VAC across the  (outside) blk + red. (99N002)

The previous review is incorrect. An autotransformer CAN work in the opposite direction. If you apply 110V to the tap, you will get close to 220V across the full winding, a bit low but quite useable.

4 out of 5 stars err ... actually ... 08/16/2011

Just to avoid confusion ... autotransformers *can* operate as step-up or step-down. They aren't just a potential divider equivalent. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autotransformer

5 out of 5 stars Autotransformer Function 10/14/2009
Reviewer: A viewer from Spring, TX US
Theoretically applying 110VAC to the two black wires would give one 220VAC across the (outside) blk + red." An autotransformer has a single winding with a low voltage tap and can not step the input voltage up like a two-winding transformer. If 120VAC is input the maximum output at the tap (or at the unconnected end of the winding) will be 60 VAC. It functions the same as a wirewound resistor with a center tap. This device is fine for the purpose intended but will not work as a step-up transformer.
